New School Year, New Opportunities: Opening Doors to Your Future
Are you considering a career in Apprenticeship or Technical Education? Construction T Level student Tiffany Timothy and NCS advisor Steve Hanley explore routes including T Levels, apprenticeships, further study and technical education.
Often, we view the start of a new academic year as a chance for a fresh start. For many young people, there’s pressure to have a clear plan, but the reality is that there are a wide range of routes into successful careers – from apprenticeships and T Levels to university and technical qualifications.
As a new school year begins, the most important thing isn’t having every step planned out. It’s being open to exploring new opportunities, asking questions and finding a route that suits your interests, strengths and ambitions.
For Tiffany Timothy, 17, from London, choosing a T Level, which included a 45 day industry placement, helped her turn an interest in construction into a career pathway.
“For me, it has opened doors and opportunities that I never knew existed,” explained Tiffany who is studying a Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction T Level specialising in Civil Engineering at La Retraite RC Girls School, alongside an industry placement with Overbury PLC. “Before starting my T Level, I knew I was interested in construction and design, but I had no idea how many career opportunities the industry had to offer.
“My placement with Overbury gave me the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals, visit live construction sites and learn about a wide range of careers in the built environment.
“It pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me build confidence and allowed me to develop skills such as teamwork, communication and presenting.”
Steve Hanley, a National Careers Service adviser with 20 years’ experience, encourages young people not to panic if they don’t have all the answers immediately.
“For many young people, results day can feel like a moment that defines their future, but this simply isn’t the case,” explains Steve.
“Every year, we speak to people who discover opportunities they hadn’t previously considered, whether that’s an apprenticeship, a T Level, further study or another route into a rewarding career.
“There are more pathways available than ever before, and young people shouldn’t feel pressured to have their entire career mapped out on one day. The key is understanding the options available and finding the route that is right for you.”
