If you’re starting Year 11 this September, this is it. Your last full year at school. GCSEs next summer, then September 2027 you’re somewhere new: sixth form, college, an apprenticeship, or a job with training. Applications for most of those routes open this autumn and close before Christmas. You don’t need everything figured out today – you need to get moving on the right things, in the right order.
The Deadlines. Sorted Early, Stress Free
Whichever direction you’re leaning whether it’s sixth form, college, or an apprenticeship the application windows mostly land in the same few months: October to early December, with some sixth form deadlines stretching into February. The single most useful thing you can do this term is apply to more than one option, even if you’re fairly sure. A backup costs nothing and means results day in August isn’t the first time you’re figuring out plan B.
One fact worth knowing: you’re legally required to stay in education, training, or a part time job alongside training until you’re 18. It’s better to know now than in September that “I’ll just get a full-time job” isn’t an option just yet.
Employability Doesn’t Wait for September
Whichever path you take, the same evidence matters everywhere. Sixth form and college applications, apprenticeship interviews, even conversations with careers advisers all ask a version of the same question: what have you actually done? Employers surveyed by the think tank Demos rated transferable skills such as teamwork, reliability, communication above technical ones by a wide margin, and 81% specifically valued teamwork. None of that requires a part-time job.
A club role, a group project you led, a sport you stuck with, coursework that took real self-management – all of it counts, as long as you can describe what you did, not just that you did it.
This is the last school year where that evidence is easy to gather. Whatever you’re involved in this term, note it down while it’s fresh. The role, what you did, one number to show scale if you can manage it. That note is the difference between a strong application in January and a blank page.
| This term | Why it matters |
| Research sixth form, college and apprenticeship options | Applications open October, most close by December |
| Apply to more than one route | A backup costs nothing and removes August panic |
| Note down what you’re doing, as you do it | Evidence for applications and interviews, ready-written |
You don’t need the whole plan by October, but, you need applications in for more than one route, and a habit of noting down what you do. Everything else, including which one you actually pick, has room to become clear as the year goes on.
