My Journey into Podcasting

Finding my voice and helping others find theirs
“I started making podcasts as a hobby, now I’m helping other young people find their voice.”
I never imagined that something I started as a hobby could become a way to help other young
people share their ideas, experiences and ambitions.
It began with a simple interest in audio and conversation. I enjoyed listening to podcasts and
hearing people talk about subjects they cared about. Eventually, I started wondering what it would
be like to create something of my own.
At first, I had plenty of ideas but wasn’t entirely sure how to turn them into a podcast. I had to learn
about planning episodes, choosing topics, recording audio and making conversations interesting for
listeners. I soon discovered that creating a podcast involves much more than simply switching on a
microphone and talking.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of preparation. Thinking about the subject
beforehand, writing down questions and having a clear idea of what I want listeners to take away
makes a real difference. I’ve also learned that sometimes the best conversations happen when you
listen carefully rather than concentrating on what you’re going to say next.
As I gained experience, I began to see how podcasting could give other young people an
opportunity to express themselves. Not everyone feels comfortable speaking in front of a classroom
or sharing their opinions in a large group. Having a conversation in a supportive environment can
offer another way for young people to communicate what matters to them.
I believe young people have stories worth hearing. We have ideas about school, careers, friendships,
technology, music and the world around us. By creating opportunities for young people to speak
openly, we can discover different perspectives and learn from one another.
Helping others find their voice also means making sure they feel comfortable and respected. I want
people to know that they don’t need to be professional speakers or have all the answers. They
simply need an opportunity to share their thoughts in their own words.
Podcasting has helped me develop skills that are useful beyond recording. I’ve become more aware
of the importance of communication, organisation, creativity and teamwork. I’ve also learned that
mistakes are part of the process. An episode might not go exactly as planned, but every experience
teaches me something new.
Looking ahead, I’d like to continue developing my skills and creating opportunities for more young
people to get involved. Whether podcasting becomes part of my future career or remains a passion
alongside other ambitions, I’m glad I took the first step.
For me, the most rewarding part isn’t just producing a podcast. It’s helping someone realise that
their ideas matter and that other people may benefit from hearing what they have to say.
My advice to other young people

“Don’t wait until you feel like an expert before you try something new. Start with an idea, learn as
you go and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you enjoy talking about subjects that matter to you,
podcasting could be a great way to develop your skills and help others share their stories too.”
Could podcasting be for you?
You don’t need expensive equipment or a professional studio to begin exploring podcasting. Start by
choosing a subject you enjoy, planning a few questions and practising how to communicate your
ideas clearly. Always get permission before recording or sharing other people’s contributions,
particularly when working with young people.
