Balancing School and Music

Finding the right rhythm between studying and doing what you love
“Music keeps me grounded and helps me stay focused. Here’s how I juggle both and keep
motivated.”
A student’s story
For me, music is more than just a hobby. It’s a way to express myself, take a break from everyday
pressures and recharge when schoolwork starts to feel overwhelming. Whether I’m practising an
instrument, learning a new piece or simply listening to my favourite songs, music gives me
something positive to focus on.
However, balancing music with school hasn’t always been easy. There are assignments to complete,
exams to prepare for and deadlines that can’t be ignored. Sometimes, it feels as though there aren’t
enough hours in the day to fit everything in.
I’ve learned that planning ahead makes a real difference. I try to organise my schoolwork around my
other commitments, breaking larger tasks into smaller steps so they feel more manageable. Having a
rough weekly routine helps me make time for studying, music and rest without feeling that I have to
sacrifice one completely for another.
I’ve also discovered that taking breaks is important. When I’ve been concentrating on schoolwork
for a long time, spending a little time with music can help me relax and return to my studies feeling
refreshed. I still need to manage distractions, though, especially when I have an important deadline
approaching.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that I don’t have to be perfect at everything. There are days
when school needs more attention and others when I have more time to practise. Learning to adjust
my plans and set realistic goals has helped me stay motivated without putting too much pressure on
myself.
Music has also taught me skills that are useful beyond the classroom. Practising regularly takes
discipline, patience and determination. Learning a difficult piece reminds me that progress doesn’t
happen overnight, and the same is true when studying for an exam or developing a new skill.
Looking ahead, I want to keep music as an important part of my life while continuing to work
towards my academic goals. I’m learning that I don’t necessarily have to choose between the things I
enjoy and the responsibilities that prepare me for the future. With some organisation, flexibility and
support, there can be room for both.
My advice to other students
“Make time for the things that make you happy, but try to plan ahead so your responsibilities don’t
become overwhelming. Break your work into smaller tasks, set realistic goals and remember to give
yourself time to rest. You don’t have to do everything perfectly to make progress.”
Finding your balance

Whether your passion is music, sport, art, gaming or another activity, having interests outside
school can be a valuable part of your life. Finding a routine that works for you can help you manage
your commitments while making time for the things you enjoy.
